OLTD 501 - Introduction to on-line learning
OLTD Learning Outcome: Critically assess and evaluate resources for best practice in online learning
Learning Reflection 1 on an Annotated Bibliography
The theme for my annotated bibliography is “Enhancing Student Interactive Engagement in On-line Learning”. The five sources I read and selected for my annotated bibliography provided evidence to show that facilitation of both synchronous and asynchronous on-line student interaction enhances student engagement and learning in on-line and blended learning courses. One article also provided evidence to show that facilitated on-line discussion as a supplement to a f2f class also enhances student engagement and learning. I have never taught on-line or blended; therefore, it is vital for me to discover best practices and to be able to evaluate them as to their effectiveness in the settings that I teach. The annotated bibliography below was created in OLTD 501 as an assignment. During OLTD 501, I have been studying Connectivism as one of the learning theories we have looked at. I believe that Connectivism might be a good fit for my own beliefs and observations about how learning occurs most effectively. I am an experienced f2f instructor at North Island College, and I have had success with facilitating student engagement with me, with each other and with the content. However, many students are more reflective learners and do not participate much in class. And some students have other responsibilities such as work and parenting, so they miss classes sometimes. I believe that supplementing f2f classes with facilitated interactive discussions and activities on-line will enhance my teaching effectiveness and the learning for my students. Therefore, using Blackboard Learn, I will prepare these opportunities within the courses I am teaching next semester.

OLTD Learning Outcome: Develop skills to optimize learning experiences through personalization
Pecha Kucha – Personalizing Learning
Reflection
One activity that I found both challenging and enjoyable in OLTD 501 was the pecha kucha, a slideshow presentation set to music. It was challenging because I hadn’t created such a presentation before. The presentation was completely about what I imagine that I will be able to do as an effective on-line teacher: enhance accessibility, facilitate collaboration, challenge minds, evoke engagement, foster connections, provoke critical thinking, inspire creativity, engender reflection, build success, effect change and motivate discovery. I liked the way that this activity allowed me to reflect on what I value about teaching and learning, and it was another reminder about teaching from the heart as well as the head. The activity was a good model of a personalized learning experience, since I was free to choose the music, free to create the text that was meaningful to me and free to choose images from the Flickr Creative Commons. It’s an activity that I plan to do with students in the future. It was also a positive skill building experience for me. Although many would find it to be a technically simple activity, I found that it was a more complex Powerpoint than I had created in the past, having only ever used simple photo slides.
