OLTD Learning Outcome: Understand, design and commit to student success in online learning environments
Evidence: The following is a resource package created for instructor use in courses within which they will integrate social media, specifically Twitter, into learning activities.
Context of the Evidence in Relation to the OLTD Outcome: The Twitter Social Media Resource Package is related to committing to student success in online learning environments and engaging in mentoring and coaching educational partners. By creating this package I learned how a social media tool could be integrated into a learning activity and the considerations I need to take into account in terms of safety and privacy.
Context of OLTD Outcome in Relation to my Practice: Since many (or all) of my students use social media it's a natural fit for a learning activity and Twitter is a platform that will allow them to make professional as well as social connections. After creating this resource package, I shared it with my English department colleagues at the college. I used the package with my students in a course last semester and one other instructor did also.

Twitter Backgrounder
English 120 Backgrounder for Use of Social Media Tool: Twitter
Tool and Educational Rationale
During the course of English 120 this semester we will be using the social media tool, Twitter, as a way of exploring character development. Twitter allows account users to “tweet” posts of up to 140 characters, which can include links. Photos may also be attached to tweets. Students will be asked to create a Twitter account for one of the characters from a short story or novel we are covering, for example, Emily in “A Rose for Emily” and to tweet messages as that character. I will also set up a Twitter chat to discuss one of the novels. While Twitter is a popular tool for personal messaging, it is also widely used for professional and educational interactions and, therefore, it is a useful tool to become familiar with.
Overview of Twitter
Twitter allows account users to “tweet” posts of up to 140 characters, which can include links. Photos may also be attached to tweets. Hashtags (#) are used to connect people and to connect them with topics of discussion. On Twitter you will find users tweeting about topics from all aspects of society: education, politics, the arts, sports, social justice, health and wellbeing, science. Account holders may choose to “follow” other account holders in order to receive their latest tweets. All tweets are public, but direct messaging between users can be private.
Information Storage Outside Canada
For Canadian users of Twitter, their information is controlled by Twitter International Company, an Irish company with its registered office in Dublin, Ireland.
FIPPA Implications
Because personal information of Twitter users is controlled and stored outside of Canada, there are implications related to British Columbia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Since you will be using Twitter for a course at a public college, you are required to sign informed consent that your personal information be used and stored.
Twitter Privacy Policy
“Irrespective of which country you live in, you authorize us to transfer, store, and use your information in the United States, Ireland, and any other country where we operate. In some of these countries, the privacy and data protection laws and rules regarding when government authorities may access data may vary from those in the country where you live” (Twitter Privacy Policy, 2016). The type of information that may be stored, used or shared by Twitter includes: Basic Account Information, Contact Information, Tweets, Following, Lists, Profile, and other Public Information, Location Information, Links you share, Cookies, Commerce Services, Advertising, Third-Parties and Affiliates, Information Sharing and Disclosure, Commerce Transactions.

Copyrights and Trademarks
Copyrighted/trademarked material cannot be used without the explicit permission of the copyright/trademark holder. This includes: music, images, text, and logos from magazines, newspapers, websites, etc. If you are unsure, please contact College Relations for more info.
Defamation
Always ensure your content is accurate, true, and not harmful to anyone or anything
Privacy
Be cautious when sharing personal information online. Particularly regarding things like photos, personal details, address, contact info, etc. Under no circumstances is it appropriate to use or disclose another person’s personal information without permission.
Tips
An honest, personal style of writing works best when communicating using social media. Focus on the message, not the tool – offer a distinct and credible point of view that engages readers. Building an online network will help get your message out. The more you’re connected, the more your voice will be heard.
No use of the internet and social media is entirely risk-free, but during your course work use, I will do all that I can to minimize the risk.
Alternative Assignment
If you do not agree with using Twitter during the course, I will provide you with an alternative assignment of equal value and rigour.
